Appledore Shipyard, located on the River Torridge in Devon, has a rich maritime history dating back to 1855. During World War II, it contributed to the war effort by building various small vessels for the Royal Navy. The dock was modernised in the 1970s and continued to build a variety of vessels, including patrol boats for the Irish Navy and sections of the Royal Navy’s aircraft carriers. In 2024, the shipyard was acquired by new owners who tasked Weaver Demolition with a complete redevelopment of the site.

Project Overview

The project involved the careful dismantling of existing structures, including the original warehouse building and the removal of asbestos materials to ultimately delivering a fully remediated site. Working directly with Torridge District Council, this project is part of the ongoing regeneration efforts in the area to create the Appledore Clean Maritime Innovation Centre.

Project Requirements

• Pre-Demolition Survey & Planning – in order to develop a demolition plan outlining the methods, equipment and safety measures to be used.

• Hazardous Material Removal – removal of asbestos materials and other contaminants and disposing of them following regulatory guidelines.

• Structural Dismantling & Salvage – dismantling buildings, preserving reusable materials like stone, wood, and metal, and processing salvaged materials for recycling or integration into the new development. For example, salvaged stonework from the warehouse was cleaned and stockpiled on-site for future use in the new development.

• Demolition – using our own fleet of machinery and equipment to take down remaining structures and ensuring dust and debris control through water suppression and containment measures.

• Debris Removal & Site Clearance – and finally levelling and compacting the site in preparation for new construction

Environmental Impact

Weaver Demolition implemented several strategies to minimise environmental impact and disturbances to surrounding areas during the project. These included:

• Pollution Prevention: Weaver Demolition implemented robust pollution prevention measures in line with all relevant legislation and guidance, ensuring control of water, air, ground, and noise pollution. Given the site’s close proximity to the estuary, particular care was taken to prevent any risk of contamination entering the water.

• Efficient Resource Use: Utilising our modern equipment and techniques, Weaver Demolition reduced waste and promoted the recycling of materials for reuse whenever possible.

Key Benefits to the Client

• Expertise & Efficiency – Weaver Demolition’s experience ensured a well-planned and professionally executed demolition, minimising delays and disruptions.

• Regulatory Compliance – Weaver Demolition managed all necessary permits, environmental regulations, and health & safety standards.

• Sustainable Practices – A structured approach to material salvage and recycling helped minimise waste and aligned with the council’s sustainability goals.

• Cost-Effectiveness – Our expertise helped streamline operations, preventing unexpected costs and ensuring budget efficiency.

• Seamless Project Integration – Our work prepared the site efficiently for the next phase of development, keeping the Appledore Clean Maritime Innovation Centre project on schedule.
