Bristol Beacon, formerly known as Colston Hall, is a historic concert hall in Bristol. With a rich cultural heritage dating back to 1867, the venue has recently undergone a £48.8m transformation to become one of the premier performance spaces in Europe. Weaver Demolition is proud to have played a crucial role in the redevelopment project, contributing their expertise in demolition and technical works.

Weaver Demolition were engaged in early discussions with the client to help develop the sequencing of the demolition works on what was a very logistically challenged site. The client had a requirement to employ a specialist contractor that could deliver a fully integrated strip out, temporary works and demolition package.

Weaver Demolition’s extensive experience in complex demolition projects and our understanding of the challenges of working on a listed building, coupled with our close working relationship with the client, made us the ideal choice for this project.

The client needed to:

  • create a more accessible and inclusive venue
  • improve the acoustics and performance space
  • update the building’s facilities and infrastructure
  • create a more sustainable venue

The project involved the following stages:

  • Early Engagement – discussing scope at pre-construction stage and looking at different potential methodologies and solutions to deliver the works in the best way possible
  • Contractor Liaison – regular meetings to plan sequencing and any potential overlaps with other contractors
  • Site Mobilisation – a dedicated site supervisor and team were engaged to co-ordinate on-site activities and to ensure good relationships with other contractors. Being familiar with the site and its constraints pays dividends.
  • Delivery of the works – Weaver Demolition utilised our in-house knowledge, plant, equipment, labour and supply chain to deliver the project.

The works were carried out in 12 different phases over a 3 year period.

Upon completion of the project, the client highly valued Weaver Demolition’s cooperation and adaptability in coordinating changes. This large-scale technical refurbishment project required close collaboration between various trades, including groundwork, steelwork, and scaffolding contractors. Weaver Demolition maintained a flexible approach throughout, which benefited the overall scheme and ensured smooth progress.

The key benefits achieved as a result of Weaver Demolition’s involvement in this project include:

  • A fully integrated strip out, temporary works, and demolition package was delivered within a tight programme and on budget.
  • The client’s requirements were fully met, and the project was delivered to their satisfaction.
  • Demonstration of our ability in delivering technical projects on logistically challenged sites.
  • The client was able to continue to operate the venue throughout the construction works, minimising disruption to the public.
  • The project has helped to transform Bristol Beacon into one of the best performance spaces in Europe, providing a boost to the city’s cultural and economic life.

Weaver Demolition is proud to have played a key role in this important project, and to help the client meet their objective of creating a world-class performance space. We look forward to continuing to work with the client on future projects.
