Contract Period

4 months

Located on the outskirts of London alongside the busy A40, the former Vauxhall and Renault dealership at Acton Garage was earmarked for redevelopment into a new data centre. Weaver Demolition was appointed to deliver the complete demolition and site clearance package, including the strip out of internal fixtures, removal of below-ground structures, remediation of contaminated ground, and verification of soils for reuse.

The project required careful coordination to ensure works were completed safely and efficiently within a constrained urban setting, while maintaining access and minimising disruption to one of London’s key arterial routes.

Project Requirements

  • Internal Strip Out – our scope began with a full internal strip out, including the safe removal of mechanical and electrical installations, fixtures, fittings, and remaining dealership infrastructure.

  • Demolition – Weaver proceeded with the complete structural demolition of the former showrooms, workshops, and associated forecourts.

  • Remediation works – were carried out to address areas of contamination and to verify the quality of soils prior to reuse. This was critical to prepare a clean, stable platform for the future data centre construction.

Throughout the works, Weaver implemented stringent traffic management measures to protect the live A40 corridor, coordinating closely with the local highways authority to avoid disruption to traffic and neighbouring businesses.

Environmental Impact

Sustainability was a major focus of this project. Over 14,000 tonnes of concrete arising from the demolition were crushed and recycled on site to create usable aggregate. This eliminated the need for approximately 1,500 lorry movements, which would otherwise have been required to transport the material off site for disposal and bring in new aggregate.

By reusing this material within the project, Weaver not only reduced the environmental impact and carbon footprint of the works, but also helped the client achieve significant cost and programme efficiencies.

Key Benefits to the Client

  • Reduced carbon footprint through extensive on-site recycling and minimal vehicle movements.
  • Efficient remediation ensuring soils were verified and certified as suitable for reuse.
  • Minimal disruption to traffic on the busy A40 thanks to proactive traffic management.
  • A safe, fully cleared, and validated site ready for the next phase of development.

Project Summary

This project demonstrated Weaver Demolition’s ability to manage technically demanding demolition and remediation works within a highly constrained, urban environment. By combining careful planning, sustainable working practices, and a collaborative approach with the client and local authorities, Weaver successfully delivered a cleared and environmentally verified site ready for redevelopment into a new data centre.
